ISO 9001:2026 draft standards have been released: What to expect in the new version

ISO 9001:2026 Revision Update — What You Need to Know

The ISO 9001 revision is on track. The Draft International Standard (DIS) has been published, with a 12-week period allocated for voting and feedback. The updated ISO 9001:2026 standard is expected to be released in the second half of 2026, likely around October or November.

Modifications to the Draft Version

The upcoming 2026 revision includes several specific updates designed to enhance alignment with the harmonized structure used across other ISO management system standards (MSS). These updates aim to improve clarity, consistency, and relevance in today’s evolving business and environmental context.

Key Modifications in the Draft Include:

  • Section 5.1 – Leadership and Commitment: Updated to emphasize the promotion of a quality culture and ethical behavior. Enhanced guidance has been added to help organizations demonstrate these principles effectively.
  • Clause 6.1 – Actions to Address Risks and Opportunities: Now features a clearer separation between risk and opportunity management, divided into new subclauses (6.1.1 to 6.1.3) with expanded explanatory notes.
  • Climate Change Integration: The climate change amendments introduced in 2024 (previously referenced in clauses 4.1 and 4.2) have been fully incorporated into the standard.
  • Clarified Requirements: Multiple clauses across Sections 4 to 10 have been refined to provide clearer expectations. Additional notes and examples have been included to improve interpretation and implementation.
  • Expanded Annex A: The annex has been significantly expanded to offer more detailed guidance aligned with clauses 4–10, providing better support for practical application.

While additional revisions may be introduced following the stakeholder review of the draft, current indications suggest that only moderate changes will be required for most certified organizations.

Transition Timeline

Organizations will have a three-year transition period, projected to conclude in late 2029, to migrate from ISO 9001:2015 to the ISO 9001:2026 revision. This extended timeframe allows businesses to thoroughly understand the updated requirements, train internal teams, and strategically plan their transition audits.

During this period, both the 2015 and 2026 versions of ISO 9001 will remain valid, ensuring a smooth and manageable transition for all certified entities.

Conclusion

The ISO 9001:2026 revision continues to reinforce the foundation of quality management by integrating emerging global priorities—such as ethics, risk management, and climate change considerations—into its framework.

Organizations are encouraged to monitor developments closely, assess potential impacts on their management systems, and begin preparing for a structured transition once the final standard is released.
